Laura Rafferty admitted she was “over the moon” after marking her first Rangers Women start since May with a 3–0 victory over Partick Thistle, as the defender completed a long-awaited return following injury.

The experienced centre-half was part of a Rangers side that started brightly, scoring twice inside the opening minutes to put immediate pressure on their opponents.

While the performance was not without its imperfections, Rafferty was clear that the most important objective had been achieved.

“It’s positive,” she said.

“We wanted the three points and we got the three points.

“We started the game well and getting two goals so early was really pleasing. Over the 90 minutes we probably could have been a bit tidier, but it’s a big three points against a tough team.”

Rafferty highlighted the importance of that fast start, particularly against a Partick Thistle side known for their resilience and organisation.

“They’re a tough team and they’ve shown that against a lot of sides this season,” she explained.

“You have to see how they come at you and adapt during the game, but we had a clear game plan, and I think we executed that well in the first half.”

While Rangers controlled large spells, Rafferty acknowledged there were moments where the game became more open than desired, especially after the break.

“It maybe became a bit too transitional at times,” she said.

“We had plenty of chances, but we also gave them some opportunities.

“As a centre-half, you pride yourself on that side of the game, so that’s something I’ll look back on and take as homework.”

Despite that, Rafferty was encouraged by the attacking play and the relationships developing across the pitch.

“The play between the lines was really good,” she added.

“It’s about distances and relationships, and that will keep improving. The effort was absolutely there and I’m proud of the girls for getting the result.”

For Rafferty personally, the afternoon carried added significance.

Making her first start in months after a long spell of rehabilitation, she described the moment as hugely rewarding.

“I’m honestly over the moon,” she said.

“A massive thank you to Leanne [Crichton] for trusting me.

“I just wanted to take the opportunity, get minutes in my legs and give something back to the group.”

She also spoke candidly about the unseen work behind her return.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Rafferty admitted.

“All the hours in the gym, on your own doing the work but it makes it even more special to be back out there with the team.”

The clean sheet was another source of pride, with Rafferty emphasising her defensive responsibilities.

“That’s my first point of call,” she said.

“Keeping the back line tight, working together and making good decisions.

“Clean sheet and three points - that’s what you want.”

Attention now turns to the final fixture before the winter break, with Rangers travelling north to face Aberdeen.

Rafferty insists the focus remains the same.

“It’s about going game by game,” she said.

“We’ll prepare properly, be positive, be brave, and hopefully finish the year in a really strong place.”
