Jo Potter has departed her role as Rangers Women’s first-team manager after two seasons at the helm.
During her tenure, the team enjoyed considerable cup success, lifting two Scottish Women’s Cups, two Scottish Women’s Premier League Cups, and the City of Glasgow Women’s Cup in 2023.
These triumphs highlighted the squad’s strength in knockout competition and demonstrated Potter’s ability to prepare her side for big occasions.
However, the one glaring omission from her honours list is the league title. Rangers failed to win the Scottish Women’s Premier League in either of her two seasons in charge, most notably suffering a final-day collapse at Ibrox against Hibernian in the 2024 campaign.
Given the club’s professional status, superior facilities, and investment relative to the majority of their domestic opponents, the failure to secure a league championship and the criticism received due to this has widely been seen as the driving force behind her departure.
That said, Potter’s time in charge was not without standout moments. Her side delivered a stunning 5–0 demolition of eventual champions Hibernian in the 2024 Sky Sports Cup Final and claimed victory over Glasgow City in her final match, this year’s Scottish Women’s Cup Final.
She also went unbeaten in her last six Old Firm fixtures, a strong record that will have pleased the Ibrox faithful.
Now, just like the men’s team earlier this summer, Rangers Women begin the search for a new manager.
Hibs boss Grant Scott, fresh from a remarkable underdog title win, is a name that will surely attract interest. Glasgow City manager Leanne Ross, one of the most decorated figures in the Scottish women’s game, is another possibility, albeit she is an admitted childhood Celtic supporter.
Paul Brownlie of Motherwell, having led a part-time side to a top-half finish, could also be in the frame.
While Potter may have already been facing the axe, reports suggest she has taken on a new role and with a year remaining on her Rangers deal, the club will receive compenstation.
With the new season fast approaching, Rangers must move quickly and get this key appointment right.
