Dick Advocaat won two Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups, and the Scottish League Cup with Rangers. He also won trophies as the manager of PSV Eindhoven and Zenit Saint Petersburg.
His managerial CV is very long and also includes him being the boss of the Netherlands three times, Sunderland in the Premier League, and now the Curaçao national football team. Managing an island nation in the Caribbean has been tempting for other experienced coaches, such as Steve McLaren.
The former England and Newcastle United manager is now in charge of Jamaica. In fact, if Advocaat's Curaçao avoid defeat to Jamaica tonight, then they will be heading to the World Cup next year.
The CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers have been blown open by the fact that the tournament is being played in the region. The United States, Mexico, and Canada are co-hosting the World Cup, which has left spaces for smaller CONCACAF teams to qualify.
We have already seen the usual suspects, such as England, Germany, and France, secure their places at the World Cup. However, smaller nations such as Cape Verde will also be heading to North America next summer.
Can Dick Advocaat's Curaçao make history?
Curaçao does not have any household names in its roster. Their squad is made up of players from a variety of clubs, including Livingston, Rotherham United, and PSV Eindhoven. They are yet to lose a game in qualification so far, with a record of three wins and two draws in five games. They defeated Jamaica back in October 2-0, thanks to goals from Livano Comenencia and Kenji Gorré.
Advocaat is very experienced on the international stage. As well as the Netherlands, he has also coached South Korea, Belgium, Russia, Serbia and Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates. He also has World Cup experience with South Korea and the Netherlands.
His Dutch side made it to the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup, which was also played in the United States. Advocaat knows soccer in the US well, as during his playing career, he represented the Chicago Sting in the old NASL.
Whilst his Curaçao side will not be expected to do as well as his Netherlands team did back in 1994, it would be a huge achievement if they were to just make it there. It would be history for the island nation to just be there, as they have never made it to the biggest stage before.
