Raith Rovers manager Dougie Imrie has admitted he is "disappointed" Rangers have decided against sending Paul Nsio back to Stark's Park for another season.
The 20-year-old midfielder impressed during his loan spell in Kirkcaldy last term, making 24 league appearances and scoring twice as he gained valuable first-team experience in the Scottish Championship.
However, Nsio is now expected to join Premiership side St Mirren on loan, with Rangers opting to test the youngster at a higher level during the 2026/27 campaign.
Imrie wanted Nsio back at Raith
Imrie has now revealed Raith made every effort to re-sign the midfielder but accepted the decision ultimately rested with Rangers.
Speaking to the Fife Free Press, he said: "Yes it's a disappointment (missing out on the Nsio signing) but Rangers are his parent club. They decide where they see him best fitted.
"We would have loved to have had him back.
"He did well for us last season, but these decisions are out of our control.
"It's Rangers' prerogative and decision where they best see Paul fitting in somewhere.
"We 100% were after him to get him back here. But they've decided that they want him to go elsewhere.
"So again, yes we're disappointed because we felt that he could come in here and kick on again.
"And it's up to Paul now to go wherever he goes, whether it's St Mirren, I know that's been touted, or elsewhere, to try and get the game time he got here.
"But it's done now, so we move on."
Rangers backing Nsio for Premiership test
While Raith were keen to extend Nsio's stay, Rangers appear to believe the midfielder is ready to take the next step in his development.
A loan move to St Mirren would offer the academy graduate the opportunity to test himself regularly in the Premiership after a productive campaign in the Championship.
Nsio's performances under Imrie demonstrated his potential, with the midfielder becoming a regular starter and showing composure beyond his years during his 24 league outings.
Should the move to St Mirren be completed, Rangers will hope another season of consistent first-team football can accelerate his progress and leave him better placed to challenge for a place at Ibrox upon his return.
The midfielder however, has not agreed a new contract with the Gers, and will reassess his squad place upon his return to Ibrox next year before committing to anything longer term.
