Rangers look set to miss out on a long-admired wide target, with Damir Redzic closing in on a move to RB Salzburg.
A deal has been agreed between Salzburg and Dunajská Streda worth £4.1 million plus add-ons, with a sell-on clause also included in the structure.
The Hungary international is expected to undergo a medical tomorrow before finalising a four-and-a-half-year contract, effectively taking him off the market before Rangers can revisit their interest.
Redzic had been firmly on Rangers radar throughout the window. The recruitment team initially explored the possibility of bringing him in as part of a wider wide-area refresh, at one stage considering a double move that would also have involved Andreas Skov Olsen.
While that plan did not progress, Redzic remained a name of interest, particularly as a potential summer addition once budgets and squad composition became clearer.
However, Salzburg’s decisiveness has changed the landscape. The Austrian side have a strong track record of identifying, developing and flipping young attacking talent, and their ability to move early with a clear financial package has proved decisive.
For Rangers, this is less about losing a primary January target and more about seeing a longer-term option slip away before the summer planning cycle.
Redzic’s profile fits the type Rangers have increasingly sought, direct, mobile, and comfortable operating in wide areas or narrower attacking channels. At just 22, he also represented a player with development headroom and resale potential, aligning with the club’s broader model of blending immediate contribution with asset growth.
There is an added subplot in that the winger is understood to have rejected a move to Celtic in the January window, narrowing his pathway to Salzburg.
That decision, combined with Rangers admiration, underlines the level of regard for his potential across the continent.
For Rangers, the focus this window has shifted more toward central areas and the forward line, which partly explains why the Redzic pursuit cooled in recent weeks.
Nonetheless, his impending move serves as a reminder of how quickly opportunities can disappear in this market, particularly when clubs with established pipelines act swiftly.
With Salzburg now poised to complete the deal, Rangers will have to look elsewhere for wide reinforcements, whether on deadline day or as part of a reshaped summer shortlist.
