Norwich’s midfield talent emerges as top target for Rangers
Rangers manager Michael Beale appears keen to strengthen his midfield ahead of next season, if reports linking the Gers with Norwich’s Kieran Dowell are to be believed.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder found a stable environment at Norwich City this season but now looks set for pastures new.
As an attack-minded player who has shown an eye for goal wherever he has been, Dowell would be an astute free transfer addition for Rangers.
With a major rebuild on the cards, recruiting quality players without massive outlay is a bonus, and the England Under-21 international has an impressive pedigree.
How is Michael Beale’s Rangers squad influenced by the level of interest in Kieran Dowell?
As a natural number eight, this suggests that Beale may not have been entirely truthful when he claimed next season’s squad will look largely unchanged. Speaking before the dismal defeat to Aberdeen, the Gers boss said:
"“Last week everyone that played – barring maybe Alfredo and Allan – will be a Rangers player next season and it was a strong performance again with five goals.”"
Rangers have been linked with four midfielders recently, including Dowell. While we likely won’t sign them all, these have been strong rumours.
According to Beale, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara and John Lundstram will stay next season, as will Todd Cantwell, Nicolas Raskin, Ianis Hagi and Malik Tillman.
And that’s before considering offering Ryan Jack a new deal due to our homegrown player quota, or Tom Lawrence returning from injury.
Kieran Dowell emerges as top target for Rangers
Players will have to be sold to make room for the likes of Kieran Dowell, and because Rangers simply need better than those who have continually let us down.
In Lundstram and Kamara, Rangers have two players acquired for little who will likely have suitors. With zero assists between them this season and just 12 in nearly 300 games – 11 Kamara’s – they are far from what we need in midfield.
Even defensive midfielders will have much possession in the final third for us domestically.
They don’t fit Beale’s system or aims and shouldn’t be here next year, whatever he says.
Kamara was said to be a £10m Nice target last summer, and Lundstram linked with a England return six months after arriving.
There will be interest in them, and it’s time to cash in.
If Beale plays his cards right, he could end up with an improved midfield and money to spend elsewhere.
