Talismanic striker Josh Maja continues to be a top transfer target for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers despite reports that current club Bordeaux are keen to extend his contract.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international has been pivotal in helping Ligue 2 side Bordeaux mount a serious promotion push back to the top flight in France this season.
Maja has demonstrated his commitment to the cause by agreeing to halve his wages to €50,000 per month, well within Rangers’ budget.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, former Sky Sports reporter Pete O’Rourke believes Rangers will pull out all the stops to secure Maja’s signature.
"“He seems like a key target for new Rangers manager Michael Beale. Rangers will hope they can persuade him to move to Ibrox ahead of interest from other clubs,” said O’Rourke.“It looks inevitable Rangers will need a new striker with Alfredo Morelos likely to leave as a free agent in the summer since he is yet to agree to a new contract.”"
Rangers chase in-form Josh Maja as new striker solution
The in-form Maja has scored 14 goals and provided five assists in 33 appearances for Bordeaux this campaign. While he may have struggled on loan at Fulham, Maja’s goalscoring prowess at Sunderland is still fresh in the memory of sporting directors across Britain.
Rangers’ outgoing sporting director Ross Wilson won’t be the only one monitoring Maja, so his successor will hope to conclude a deal with Bordeaux.
Out-of-contract players present an inexpensive way for Rangers to revamp their squad. However, they are also often in high demand.
Rangers aren’t the only club on a tight budget, and replacing Morelos without paying a transfer fee could be the ideal way for the new sporting director to make a strong first impression.
