Rangers FC must roll up their sleeves to sign one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League.

Rangers have their sights set on tomorrow’s game against Kilmarnock as they aim to keep their place at the top of the table, but the scouting department continues to identify transfer targets.

Last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Livingston reminded everyone that consistency and creativity can, at times, be a major problem for Rangers in midfield.

The club has a few dynamic players that can create chances for themselves and others around them, but this also leads to predictability for the opposition, which in turn makes it difficult to break defensive sides down.

One solution for this issue can be found just south of the border. According to a new report from Glasgow Live, Rangers are interested in signing John Lundstram from Sheffield United, who is recognized as one of the most underrated players in the English top flight.

With five goals and three assists to his name last season, Lundstram found success in the final third despite playing deep in the middle of the park in a team that was heavily dependent on counter-attacking football.

The 26-year-old midfielder has spent the last three seasons of his career with the Blades – two in the Championship and one in the Premier League.

Lundstram had an automatic one-year extension triggered in his contract, but a contract extension going forward seems unlikely. Chris Wilder’s side has benefited from Lundstram’s consistency and football acumen in midfield.

The former Oxford United and Blackpool star is a true box-to-box midfielder who can disrupt opposing counter-attacks and also orchestrate meaningful attacks on the other end.

Rangers need a blue collar midfielder who is not afraid to do the dirty work defensively, but also get involved in the action in the final third when the opportunity presents itself.

Lundstram would have an immediate impact for the Light Blues with his experience and style of play. It is also worth mentioning that his arrival would make others in midfield step up their game as well, specifically Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield.

Some other reports suggested that Rangers should offer Glen Kamara in a swap deal for Lundstram, but my opinion is that they can be a formidable duo in midfield.

With Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo in line for big seasons, and the arrivals of quality strikers Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, John Lundstram would be the icing on the cake for this campaign.

The exact price Rangers would have to pay is not all that clear, but multiple reports indicate that he could be sold for around £5m.
