Alfredo Morelos’ extension shows wisdom from Steven Gerrard

Rangers and striker Alfredo Morelos agreed to a contract extension recently. It shows wisdom and maturity from new manager Steven Gerrard.
A few weeks ago Rangers and Alfredo Morelos agreed to an extension for the Columbian striker that will keep him with the club through 2022. New boss Steven Gerrard has consistently said nothing but great things about the young Columbian.
Gerrard thinks so highly of Morelos that when asked about teams calling about potentially buying Morelos from Rangers, Gerrad outright said “Don’t bother” with a smile on his face. Get yourself someone who looks at you the way Steven Gerrard looks when talking about Alfredo Morelos.
Regardless, Morelos is one of the few holdovers on the roster from last year and joins James Tavernier as the only ones who have been regular contributors.
The fact that Gerrard has said nothing but glowing things about his striker along with the new contract extension shows good wisdom from the first time manager. Often times when a new boss arrives (this is true at businesses other than just football clubs) with the allowance to overhaul the roster they go all out and make an effort to essentially purge the squad of past players since “they are not my guys”.
Given where Rangers have been the past few years, one could hardly even blame Gerrard if he had simply gone with the approach that Rangers had to totally purge the roster.
While Gerrard has made a huge turnover on the roster, bringing in tons of players and sending out, even more, Gerrard did not come in with his decision pre-made that he had to get all of his own guys. Gerrard quickly identified Morleos as a player who he loved and he latched on quickly.
When given the chance to totally overhaul the roster so many coaches let their pride get in the way to not see the good in players already with the team. Gerrard shows great vision and wisdom to recognize that Morelos is a player worth holding onto.
