In an interview this week the Rangers forward remained optimistic about the season.

In an interview with radio station Cool FM Rangers veteran forward Kyle Lafferty insisted that everyone in the locker room was still confident despite the loss to Celtic. Saying “Everyone in the Rangers dressing room believes that we will get 55 and this will be the year we win the league”

Lafferty added on all of the normal platitudes players give about how the team will continue to work hard and will not be getting down. He also talked about how it was an easy decision for him to return to Rangers from Hearts of Midlothian.

“It wasn’t difficult at all. No disrespect to Hearts. I loved my time there and will have friends from there for a long time and I wouldn’t have changed anything but when you support a team and they come calling it is difficult to turn that down.”

One of the main points that Lafferty brings up was how tired the team was following their qualification into Europe following a 1-1 tie in Russia where the team played with just 8 men for over a half hour.

It is often a smart idea to avoid this sort of bulletin board material, better to let your play on the pitch talk for you. But given where Rangers have been, it is rather refreshing to have a player on the squad remain so unabashedly positive about the coming campaign.

This, of course, is one of the benefits of bringing Lafferty back to the club, as well as veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Both players were at Rangers when beating Celtic wasn’t a lofty aspiration, but nearly a requirement.

Hopefully, the rest of the club see’s Lafferty’s confidence and can accept it. It has been so long since Rangers (or anyone else in Scottish football) has really competed with Celtic that it is easy to forget that it wasn’t actually that long ago that they did. The task remains large, but it is far from impossible.
